Casual, Cozy Kitchen in Dallas

In this Texas cottage kitchen, owners Craig Schumacher and Philip Kirk avoided an extensive kitchen remodel by painting existing cabinets Benjamin Moore Brilliant White and installing inexpensive black and white tile on counters and backsplashes. An extensive ironstone collection overflows from shelves to walls. Vintage jurors' chairs (stained ebony) came from assorted flea markets and antiques shops.

Nautical Kitchen on Nantucket Harbor

Designer Gary McBournie created a subtle nautical theme without going overboard in this fisherman's cottage. Kitchen cabinetry was made by Nantucket furniture maker Carter Mitchell. The open grate design allows for ventilation and the concealment of appliances. Simple plank flooring is painted Benjamin Moore's Deep Ocean and spattered in red, white, and blue. Sconces are brass marine fixtures.

Functional Yet Inviting New York Kitchen

Robin Bell designed this kitchen in an 1880s seaside cottage to combine high function and friendliness. An 18th-century American harvest table with original paint and 19th-century American shawl-back chairs instantly warm up the classic white room, "command central of a very active household," says Bell. Above the island is a wrought-iron pot rack designed by Bell, hung with the clients' "serious pot collection," bought on trips to France and Italy.

Connecticut Kitchen with a New Take on Tradition

This simple 1939 lakeside cottage marries modern and traditional, and its kitchen, designed by Gil Schafer, follows suit. The floor is painted in Pratt & Lambert's Gunnel. Ceiling lights are from Urban Archaeology, cabinet hardware from Sun Valley Bronze. Elkay stainless-steel Farmhouse sink, Barber Wilsons polished nickel faucet, Sub-Zero refrigerator.

Long Island Kitchen with a Personal Touch

Designer Amanda Kyser added intimate details to this Long Island kitchen in a former camp cottage. Her design includes an island with granite countertops and French factory lights with ribbed glass lenses that "just glow." A wall painted Benjamin Moore's Merlot Red sets off white dishware salvaged from a grand seaside hotel in France that was torn down.

Designer T. Keller Donovan created this versatile, straightforward kitchen in a classic seaside cottage. "When you have an all-white kitchen like this, you can change your mind, you can have an 'orange attack' and buy a bunch of orange things for a completely different look," Donovan says.

A Rhode Island Kitchen That Honors the Past

Designer John Peixinho filled this 278-year-old home in Newport with things he loves. A view into the kitchen reveals a collection of 19th-century blue and white Chinese export porcelain. The rug is a plastic Tartan mat from Pearl River in New York.

An Airy Kitchen in a Napa Valley Cottage

Designer Ken Fulk used pen shelves, instead of upper cabinets, to give this 1940s California kitchen an airy feel. The shelves and countertops are made of galvanized metal and the cabinetry is made from old fencing. Vintage truck springs, used as stools, were found at Artefact Design & Salvage. Fulk spotted the vintage industrial pendant lights at a Paris flea market.
